The Journey:
Departing north out of Blenheim Station, powered by the vintage red and white classic Diesel Electric Locomotive (Da1431), hauling our original renovated Victorian carriages.
The Marlborough Flyer travels through vast landscapes of scenic vineyards in a region globally celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc. It crosses the Wairau River—the longest river in New Zealand’s South Island—via the tour’s longest bridge, before continuing past the tranquil settlement of Tuamarina.
Further north we pass the now flourishing Para Wetlands, with after more than a decade of conservation work, remain the largest freshwater wetland in Marlborough.
The final stretch takes you up the Picton elevation, one of the steepest on the New Zealand Rail network, a 1 in 37 slope.
The Marlborough Flyer has the advantage of balconies at both ends of each carriage which enables passengers a convenient viewing position.
Enjoy some time to stretch the legs in Picton and make the most of this stop to photograph the Locomotive as it decouples from the carriages moves around tracks to couple again and begin it's journey back south.
